A Traditional Inner Courtyard and Hibukuro That Bring Natural Light Inside

Traditional machiya were often designed with clever ways to bring natural light into interiors, which can otherwise be quite dark. At the back of the kitchen, an open vertical space known as a hibukuro, together with the inner courtyard (tsuboniwa), helps draw daylight into the house. TSUBONOI retains both of these traditional features, offering a glimpse into the wisdom and ingenuity of those who built homes in the past.

A Functional Kitchen & Laundry Area

For comfortable extended stays, TSUBONOI is equipped with a kitchen for preparing your own meals and a washer-dryer. Enjoy the experience of living in Kyoto with the comforts you need for everyday life.

Floor Plan

Before You Book

In renovating TSUBONOI, we preserved as much of the original machiya structure as possible and used traditional techniques and natural materials such as wood and earth. Because of this, please keep the following points in mind before your stay:
  • There is a steep staircase. The stairs may be difficult to use for young children, older adults, and guests with mobility limitations.
  • The walls are traditional earthen walls made of earth and straw. The surface may chip or come away if objects rub against or strike the walls.
  • The toilet is located in a semi-outdoor space facing the inner courtyard. There is no air conditioning in the toilet.
  • The bathroom is a shower booth. There is no bathtub.
  • The property retains its original old windows and doors. Some may not open or close as smoothly as modern fixtures.
  • TSUBONOI is part of a traditional row-house structure and shares walls with neighboring homes. Please keep noise to a minimum, especially at night.
