A Study You Can Stay In
TSUBONOI is a small, nine-tsubo Kyoto townhouse, designed to feel like a private study you can stay in. Built in 1922, the house retained much of the character of an ordinary Kyoto machiya. To preserve its unique charm, we renovated it together with architecture students in Kyoto, using traditional techniques and natural materials wherever possible.
While retaining the original floor plan and many of the building’s original elements, we added a dedicated workspace and the modern amenities needed for contemporary living. The space is designed to allow guests to immerse themselves in their own creative work and research.
Away from the bustle of sightseeing, take time to reflect in a historic Kyoto machiya. As soft light shifts throughout the day in the inner courtyard, Tsubo no I offers a quiet stay where you can experience Kyoto as if you were living here.
大工の卵たちとともに改修した宿
改修は、京都の建築専門学校の学生や先生とともに、1年以上をかけて行いました。
建築当初から残る柱や梁などの部材、火袋や坪庭に面した洗面所といった町家ならではの構造を可能なかぎり残しながら修繕。
柱や床材には無垢の杉や檜を使い、壁は竹で下地を編み、山から自ら採取してきた土と稲藁を練り塗るなど、自然の素材と伝統の手法を大切にしています。
改修に携わった学生たちは、今は大工や設計士として京都や日本の建築を支えています。

木や土など自然素材の温もりに包まれた静かな空間は、京都をじっくり味わいたい方はもちろん、ものづくりや執筆、研究などに集中したい方にも最適です。
